Born in Toronto, Helga Sermat grew up immersed in the language and culture of her Estonian parents. Formal education includes an arts degree from York University in Toronto as well as further studies in theatre design, drawing, and printmaking at University of British Columbia, Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver and Saidye Bronfman School of Fine Art in Montreal.

She has worked as a costume and prop maker, art workshop leader for children and adults and was a co-founder of Urban Source, an alternative art materials store in Vancouver, British Columbia. She participated in Les Femmeuses from 2003-2005, and at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition for the past seven years.

Helga’s unique technique of working with coloured pencil involves the gradual build up of thin layers of pigment resulting in a vibrant and luminous surface. Her finished drawings have been described as intimate, charming and highly imaginative.

Helga divides her time between Montreal and Hemmingford, Quebec and practices illustration, art and web design full-time.
